Sound Art class with Ivo Bol

CEMI and the College of Music is proud to welcome Ivo Bol, a guest artist in residency, in conjunction with iARTA (Initiative for Advanced Research in Technology and the Arts). Ivo will be working within CEMI Nov. 7-20 and will be collaborating with David Stout's Sound Art class to produce the Nov. 19 exhibit and performance in the Merrill Ellis Intermedia Theater. Ivo will present 2 works and a demonstration of his approach to live electronic instruments that includes a hybrid Wii remote interfaced to a Yourock midi guitar. Cosmological Flight (2011) – for 8 channel diffusion Cosmological Flight was originally composed for the Wave Field Synthesis system. Wave Field Synthesis is a technique for distributing sound through space in a realistic way. It is based on the Huygens principle, applied to sound. The WFS created by the Game of Life foundation is the only portable system in the world, consisting of 192 speakers set up in a 30 by 30 ft rectangular configuration. Amazingly, it is possible to move the sounds outside the square of speakers, as if they come from 150 feet away. The inspiration for Cosmological Flight is the way painters Jackson Pollock and Kazemir Malevich conceived of very contrasting ideas of space. The organic, chaotic nature of Pollock's immense drip paintings versus the spiritual abstract paintings of Malevich where planes collide in imaginary spaces. The sonic material for this piece comes from samples from a thrift store vinyl collection and field recordings. Amanda (2011) – for 8 channel diffusion Amanda is a live electronic piece composed for the performance Amanda & the black void of space, directed by Luis Lara Malvacias and performed earlier this year in Warehouse 9 in Copenhagen, Denmark and in the Joyce Soho theatre in New York. Ivo specializes in sound installations, developing live sampling and synthesis instruments using LiSa and various game controllers, such as the Wii Remote, to trigger, sample, and manipulate sounds in an intuitive and playful way. He has collaborated with theater makers, choreographers, filmmakers, and visual artists and has performed throughout Europe, in China, the United States and Venezuela. Recently, Recently, Ivo's spacial composition for the Wave Field Synthesis system from the Game of Life Cosmological Flight premiered in September 2011 at the Gaudeamus Muziekweek in Utrecht, The Netherlands. Ivo's residency is made possible with the support of the Netherland America Foundation and the Performing Arts Fund in The Netherlands.
