The Center for Experimental Music & Intermedia (CEMI) is an interdisciplinary center focused on
music and arts technologies. CEMI fosters integration of electroacoustic music, live performance,
video/film, plastic arts, and theater. Since its 1963 inception as an electronic music center
CEMI has evolved into an unique creative environment, world-renowned for innovative works and
musicians. In 2005, CEMI was noted in Schools that Rock: The Rolling Stone College Guide, which
named the UNT College of Music as one of the nation's best music programs.
CEMI's mission is to advance the state of the art in experimental music and intermedia. To accomplish this mission, CEMI supports and promotes:
- creation of innovative experimental music and intermedia;
- preparation of UNT students for the future of music and intermedia arts technology;
- collaboration with colleagues across disciplines to develop new artwork and research, and with counterparts in industry to develop innovative technologies;
- presentation of new work in performances, conferences, and residencies that extend UNT's visibility and reach; and
- research and publication in fields related to CEMI activities, such as composition, sound synthesis, digital signal processing, sound diffusion, interactive systems, physical computing, and human-machine interfaces.
