Konstantinos Karathanasis & Ricardo Coelho de Souza

CEMI presents a concert of percussion and electronics featuring guest composer, Konstantinos Karathanasis (electronics) and performer Ricardo Coelho de Souza (percussion) Monday Jan 31, 2011 at 8:00 P.M. in the MEIT. Program: Kajia Saariaho, Six Japanese Gardens (percussion & live electronics) Javier Álvarez, Temazcal (amplified maracas & stereo recording) Cort Lippe, Music for Hi-Hat and Computer Konstantinos Karathanasis, Dionysus (percussion & live electronics) Bios: Konstantinos Karathanasis teaches composition & music technology at the University of Oklahoma School of Music. As a composer he draws inspiration for his music from various sources: modern poetry, artistic cinema, mysticism, eastern philosophy, and the depth psychology of Carl Jung. His music has received performances and awards worldwide, and can be heard on CD's from SEAMUS, ICMA, Ionian University and Musica Nova. Karathanasis holds a Ph.D. in Music Composition from the University at Buffalo, where he studied under the guidance of Cort Lippe and David Felder. Brazilian-born pecussionist Ricardo A. Coelho de Souza teaches world music and percussion at the University of Oklahoma and is actively engaged in composing and playing with jazz and Latin groups, orchestras, and bands. He has been featured at numerous festivals including the Percussive Arts Society International Convention, the TCU Latin American Arts Festival, the International Music Festival of Pará, and Roulette in New York City. He has premiered more than 30 works for percussion and collaborated with numerous composers. His music is published by C. Alan Publications and the OU Percussion Press.
